  Thailand » Koh Samui
      City Guide

Koh Samui is what most people say it is. A laid back, great mid sized island, with plenty of good beaches, a wide range of decent accommodations for every budget and plenty to do. To the north west, you have the likes of mainland Hua Hin and Cha-Am. The traditional seaside resort towns for weekend and vacationing Thais. Hua Hin is Thailand s oldest beach resort with safe year round swimming, and supports no fewer than 5 golf courses (plus great seafood). Cha-Am has more of a party atmosphere

Secret Buddha Garden
Hidden in the hills of Samui, the secret Buddha garden has several statues, temples and waterfalls, all of which were built by one man over the last 20 years.

Chaweng beach
Located on the east coast, Chaweng is the largest and most action-packed beach on the island. Protected by a offshore coral reef it has a nice shallow lagoon which is great for swimming.

Lamai Beach
Further down the coast, south of Chaweng, and more compact, Lamai Beach offers small bars and a different style. You ll find a number of "new age" spa retreats, offering relatively inexpensive pampering and esoteric therapies.

Angthong Marine National Park
Consists of roughly 40 islands, mostly comprised of limestone masses rising to heights of 400 meters, pristine beaches and lush forests. The emerald saltwater lake on Ko Mae Ko (Mother Island) entails a strenuous climb and is a major scenic attraction. Another popular venue is the Ko Sam Sao (Tripod Island) with an extensive coral reef.

Ko Phangan
The ever-popular Full Moon party is held annual at Ko Phangan where revellers from all over the world come to dance the night away and be merry. It also has many beautiful natural attractions, such as waterfalls, hillside temples, and pristine beaches.

Khao Sok National Park
It is becoming more popular every day as more people discovers that the lush jungles and mountainous complexes are still inhabited by numerous wildlife.

Snake Farm
This farm is a must-see for almost anyone visiting the island. See some of the most famous scary and poisonous snakes in action, some indigenous to Samui, some from other parts of Asia. A ringside view! Also includes displays of centipedes and scorpions, as well as demonstrations of Thai Cock Fighting.

Naga Pearl Farm
Discover how pearls are cultured. A 30-minute boat ride from Ban Thong Krut landing will bring you to Koh Matsum and the Naga Pearl Farm.

Namuang Falls
There are actually two waterfalls: Na Muang, 18 metres high which can be reached by car, and Na Muang Two, about 80 metres high, requiring a 30-minute walk to get to the top. These waterfalls are the most scenic on the island and a great place to have a picnic. Located 10 Km south of Nathon.

Samui Aquarium and Tiger Zoo
Located in Hua Thanon, the aquarium has many local species of coral fish, huge catfish and several sharks including leopard and black tip sharks.

At the outdoor stalls (and some indoor shops) bargaining for clothes, t-shirts and souvenirs is almost expected of the tourists by the vendors. Try to strike a fair price, and remember, they have to earn a living too. Bargaining for food products rarely takes place.

Shopping in Koh Samui is limited to three major areas; these are Nathon market, Chaweng market and Lamai market.

To reach nearby islands such as Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan or Koh Phangan, many speedboats depart from Bophut Bay daily. There is only one main road that follows the coast around the island and one road crossing the southern part. One can hire a taxi or a private car (for which one needs to have an international driving licence). Hiring motorbikes is another option.
