Switzerland is one of Europes most visited countries with breathtaking scenery and picturestique peaks. Switzerland is renowned for its enviable quality of life in a country that ticks along like clockwork. Its products are sought after the world over, from dangerously delicious cheese and chocolate to luxurious watches ons stand happily in their elegant Gothic frames. Zurich is arguably the financial and cultural center of Switzerland. As a visitor however, you will simply be faced with a beautifully laid-out city with a magnificently well-preserved Old Town (Altstadt) at its medieval center. One of the most satisfying pastimes is to sit in one of the elegant lakeside cafes and enjoy the view of Lake Zurich crisscrossed by several bridges, with mountains in the background.

Fraumünster Church
Dating from the 13th century, the Fraumünster Church nearby is noted for the distinctive stained-glass windows in its choir section.

Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts is one of the most important of Zurich s many museums. The large permanent collection ranges from 15th-century religious art to the various schools of modern art. There s a fair sprinkling of Picassos, a whole room devoted to Marc Chagall and the largest Edvard Munch collection outside Scandinavia.

Schweizerisches Landesmuseum (Swiss National Museum)
The Swiss National Museum lies on a landscaped triangle between the Hauptbahnhof and the Limmat and Sihl rivers. Special exhibits in this castle-like museum supplement the permanent display of items related to Switzerland and Swiss culture. These include paintings and sculpture but also weapons, flags, watches, clocks, tools, toys and prehistoric objects.

Zooh! Zürich
The open, park-like enclosures of the Zurich zoo house some 1500 animals from points near and far, in areas that replicate the animals natural environments.

Botanischer Garten (Botanical Gardens)
It is a great place to get away from the city and inside which you will find over one million plants.

Kunsthaus Zürich (Zurich Art Gallery)
This is the citys most important art gallery, boasting a collection of paintings and sculptures by Swiss and international masters, covering most periods from medieval time.

The elegant Bahnhofstrasse, Zurichs main shopping zone is concentrated in the city centre. Built on the site of the city walls which were torn down 150 years ago, it must be one of the most beautiful shopping areas in Europe. Enjoy the elegant fashion stores, department stores, boutiques with top quality products (shoes, furs, accessories, porcelain, jewellery and watches), banks and pastry shops. Underfoot are bank vaults crammed with gold and silver and other booty - unfortunately these are not open to the public. For the clock-watchers, the 13th-century tower of St Peter s Church has the largest clock face in Europe.

Medieval arcades of Berne - Old cellar vaults house specialty antique stores, traditional cake cafes and nostalgic old-town curios. The arcades also provide a good selection of designer fashion, watches, jewellery and modern luxuries.

Niederdorf - During the day this is a pedestrian zone and a shopper s paradise with lots of boutiques hidden away in a patchwork of alleys. At night the many bars, restaurants and street artists turn the Niederdorf into an exciting center of entertainment for a colorful public.

In the old town on both sides of the Limmat River there are countless boutiques and antique shops.

Boat
If you have time and money, it s possible to get to Switzerland by boat along the Rhine all the way from Amsterdam. Switzerland can also be reached by lake steamer ferries from Germany via Lake Constance, from Italy via Lake Maggiore and from France via Lake Geneva.
