Shopping is one of Barcelona s greatest attractions, with a bountiful five-kilometer (three-mile) shopping strip, all the way from the water s edge at Port Vell right up La Rambla to Diagnol. Shops open at 0900 or 1000 and close again for an extended lunch, between 1330 and 1600 or 1700. In the evening, shops shut at 2000 or 2030.

The area of Diagonal, in the high part of the city, is another interesting shopping area. Here we find two department stores, along with the most famous designers boutiques in Barcelona.

Between the Plaça de Catalunya and C. Portaferrissa and along Av. Portal de l Ángel, an important shopping area can be found, including two department stores and many shops selling fashions, accessories and other articles.

The metro is the easiest way to get around the city. Barcelona s Metro system consists of five main lines; it crisscrosses the city more frequently and with greater efficiency than the bus network. Two commuter trains also service the city, fanning out to the suburbs. Service is Monday to Friday from 5am to 11pm, Saturday from 5am to 1am, and Sunday and holidays from 6am to 1am.

Buses in the city run daily from approximately 0630 until approximately 2200. The network is extensive and almost all services run through Plaça de Catalunya, Plaça Urquinaona or Plaça de la Universitat.

There are 11,000 yellow-and-black registered taxis operating in the city. Not only available on the street, taxis can also be booked in advance. Reliable companies include Radio Taxi and Servitaxi.
