Penang has always been reputed as a shopper s paradise. The range of things visitors can buy is unending and includes clothes, curios, antiques, paintings, batik, souvenirs, household and electrical gadgets. Prices while low are usually reasonable and competitive.

The first place anyone here will recommend you to go for shopping is KOMTAR. Short for Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak. It is the largest shopping complex in Penang.

In the city centre, the area around Jalan Penang, Leburhaya Campbell, Lebuhraya Kapitan Keling, Lebuhraya Chulia, and Lebuhraya Pantai is near the Sri Mariamman Temple, the Penang Museum, the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and other sites of historic interest. Here you ll find everything from local crafts to souvenirs and fashion, and maybe even a bargain or two. Most of these shops are open from 10am to 10pm daily.

Out at Batu Feringgi, the main road turns into a fun night bazaar every evening just at dark. During the day, there are also some good shops for batik and souvenirs.

There are special Ferries that operate around the town going from port to port into various markets and parts of town. Taxis are abundant, but be warned they do not use meters, so you must agree on the price before you ride. There are buses also run all over the island, and are well used by tourists. The most popular route is the Hin Bus Co. (Blue Bus) no. 93,which operates every 10 minutes between Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) in Georgetown and the beach resorts at Batu Feringgi. It makes stops at KOMTAR Shopping Plaza and also at the ferry terminal. Car rental is available. Hertz has an office in Georgetown at 38 Farquhar St. (tel. 04/263-5914).
