Local crafts to look for include wood carvings of people and animals by local Kamba craftsmen, Kisii soapstone carvings, sisal baskets wound by Kikuyu and Kamba women, beadwork made by the Masai and other tribes, decorated gourds and musical instruments. Gemstones are another popular item to shop for.
Village Market Masai Market: Primarily Masai women selling their crafts, which they spread out on blankets in the parking lot of this shopping mall. Be prepared to bargain, but the market is known for low rates. Look for beaded work, wood and soapstone sculptures, batik, masks and baskets.
Kariakor Market, located just outside town off racecourse Road, is another excellent market for handicrafts, in particular for good and reasonable priced sisal basketwork.
For the best range and prices in art and handicrafts, Nairobi hosts three separate open Markets:
Tuesdays- Globe Cinema Roundabout, City Centre
Fridays- Village Market, Gigiri
Sundays- Safari Park Hotel, Thika Road.
In these large bustling Markets, traditional handicrafts from all over Kenya, and Africa, are on sale. Bargaining is the expected norm, and there are certainly bargains to be found.
