Nainital is famous not just for its green hills or many lakes. It is also famous for its many legends and stories. Hundreds of ancient temples and peaks with astounding views of the mountains in the background add to magical appeal of Nainital. This idyllic station is nestling in the heart of Kumaon Hills.The history of this dainty town sails over the surface of the Naini Lake, where oarsmen narrate the stories of the rishis who brought the waters of the sacred Mansarovar River.

Suffocating at times with thousands of tourists, Nainital is also home to Sherwood, one of India s most prestigious schools.

 




Rail:
The Shatabdi Express shuttles once a week (Sundays) between Delhi and Kathgodam (35 km from the hill station), only during the summer season. Railway station: Nearest railhead is Kathgodam, 35 km south of Nainital - connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Agra, Bareilly and Lucknow.

Road:
Good motorable roads. Delhi Transport Corporation runs deluxe coaches to Nainital. So do many private operators in the Capital. Road distances to Nainital: Delhi 322 km; Bareilly 141 km; Lucknow 401 km; Almora 66 km; Ranikhet 60 km; Kausani 120 km; Corbett (Dhikala) 128 km. Bus terminus: Most buses and shared jeeps leave from the bus stand at Tallital.

Climate
Summers are pleasant in Nainital as temperatures remain between 11°C and 27.5°C. In the winters, however, temperatures may drop between 2°C and 16°C

Naini Lake
The huge, blue-green lake is one of the prime attractions of this hill town. Naini Lake gets its name from its eye-like shape. You can either go boating here or try your hands at fishing. Better still, take a walk around the lake. It is quite pleasant to even take a walk around the town in the afternoon.

Astronomical Observatory
The telescopes and binoculars set up here offer spectacular views of the valley. Situated close to Hanuman Garh, the observatory is the most modern in India.

Naina Peak
This is the highest peak in Nainital (2,611 m), bordering the Naini Lake. At 6 km from the town centre, it is a great place for picnics. It is also a must-see if you want a bird s eye-view of the valley.

Land s End
About 4 km away from the town centre, it gives you the best panoramic view of Khurpa Tal, one of the several lakes scattered all over Nainital.

Snow View
At 2,270 m above sea-level, Snow View offers spectacular sights of the northern Himalayan peaks. You can either take a healthy walk up to the spot or hire a pony. You could also take a ropeway from Mallital to reach the spot.

Ramgarh
Located 26 km from Nainital, Ramgarh is surrounded by fruit orchards, especially apples.

Mukhteshwar
A popular picnic sight overlooking the Himalayan ranges. There is an All India Research Centre for Animal Treatment here. There are very few buses to this place from Nainital but regular taxi services can be hired from Bhowali. The best views of the Trisul and Nanda Devi can be seen from here. For those interested in history, you must visit the PWD guesthouse at the end of the ridge. Jim Corbett stayed here in this guesthouse when he came to shoot the man-eater of Mukhteshwar.

Corbett National Park
Established in 1936 by Jim Corbett, among others, this national park is Himalayan India s last expanse of wilderness. For wildlife enthusiasts, the place to stay is Dhikala, the KMVN accommodation. From here you can head into the forest on an elephant or jeep safari. The park is closed from mid-June to mid-November. Try and visit between February and May. The Corbett National Park is located at 63 km southwest of Nainital.

Bhimtal
Located 22 km away, Bhimtal is a quieter reflection of Nainital. One can find facilities for boating as well as water sports. En route you ll find a museum which houses cultural artefacts from Uttarakhand. The charming little isle in the centre of the lake even has a restaurant. Tourist buses for Bhimtal leave Nainital at regular intervals. 
Naukuchiatal
Located 26 km from Nainital, this lake gets its name from its nine-angled shape. Boating and angling are some of the activities tourists can engage in.

For shoppers, Nainital lays itself out on the Mall, Mallital and Tallital bazaars and the Tibetan market. Woollens, candles and cane sticks are nice buys to carry back home.
If you want to give the local handicrafts a try, go to the Hill Top Tourist Point on the Mall, or try Kasta Kala Kendra Collection.
