Kavaratti Kavaratti, the capital of Lakshadweep, is the most developed of all islands. You can find lots of things to do on this picture-perfect island. Facilities are available for water sports like kayaking and sailing. There are over 50 ancient mosques spread out all over the island. Of particular interest among them is Urja mosque, famous for its ornately carved ceiling. The Marine Aquarium has a vast collection of aquatic specimens.
If you want a closer look at the underwater world surrounding you, nothing beats a ride in the glass-bottomed boats available here. The clear water has great visibility, and the sparkling world beneath your feet simply takes your breath away. Tourist huts, tents and a floating restaurant are some other attractions on Kavaratti.
Kalpeni Renowned for its scenic beauty, a bank of coral debris along the eastern and south-eastern shoreline with a sparkling lagoon in between makes this island a must-see. Kayaks, sailboats, pedal boats are available on hire. You can also have a great time reef walking, as Kalpeni has a rich coral life. The island has four tourist cottages managed privately by the islanders.
Minicoy The southern most island, Minicoy has a rich tradition of performing arts. The entrancing Lava Dance is performed on festive occasions. A visit to the tuna canning factory and the lighthouse built by the British in 1885 on the island are musts.
Kadmat One of the finest diving spots in Lakshadweep. A Water Sports Institute and a Diving school providing water sports facilities with trained instructors have been set up here. Kadmat is the only island apart from Bangaram where international tourists are allowed. Shimmering lagoons on both its eastern and western shores make this island a perfect romantic retreat. The tourist huts are situated far from the hub of activity, with only the occasional call of a seabird breaking the silence.
Agatti Virtually the gateway to Lakshadweep, Agatti has the only airport on the islands. A 20-bedded tourist resort has been built here. Agatti also has one of the most awesome lagoons of Lakhshadweep.
Bangaram Bangaram combines the experience of living on an exotic and uninhabited island with the excitement of exploring a mysterious underwater world. The clear, warm waters surrounding this remote island are lush with exquisite coral formations like the black coral, and possess a thriving marine life. You?ll find rare coral fish like the angel, the clown, the surgeon and the butterfly, the scary but harmless mantaray, sting rays, moray eels and giant turtles paddling away merrily in the water, paying no heed to the divers. The Bangaram Island Resort, with 60 beds, a restaurant and a Diving School, is particularly aimed at the international tourists. It has some excellent water sports facilities. A dive into the waters of Banagram is a must while visiting Lakshadweep, for no other experience compares to this rendezvous with ocean life.
