The closest railhead is at Kottayam, which is 14 km away.

Road
The city of Kochi is 78 km away. Kottayam is 14 km away. Kumarakom is connected to Kottayam by a road that is less than perfect. It is however scheduled to be repaired in the near future. The drive to Kumarakom from Kottayam is very pleasant, as you pass paddy fields and villages that are criss-crossed with canals. The nearest bus terminal is in Kottayam, and from there, you will have to rent a car to take you to Kumarakom.

Air
The nearest airport to Kumarakom is Kochi (Cochin), which is 110 km away.

Waterways
You can also cruise down to Kumarakom in your houseboat from either Alappuzha or Kochi. Most resorts here are on the waterfront, and have boat jettys on the opposite banks of Lake Vembanad, so you can also drive down from Kochi and then take a boat across to your resort.

All the resorts in Kumarakom are more or less self-contained and offer a variety of activities, from angling to cruising and visiting villages along the backwaters, watersports on the lake and visits to local farms and paddy plantations.

Water Bird Sanctuary: 14 acre bird sanctuary is situated on the eastern banks of the Vembanad lake. The sanctuary adds to the natural beauty of Kumarakom. Birds (waterfowl, water ducks, cuckoos, wild ducks etc.) nest and spend happy summers here. Birds like Siberian storks migrate here every year.

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls: Located 18 km from Kottayam town, is this beautiful picnic spot where streams tinkle as they make their way through the landscape and waters roar as they cascade down the mountains from a height of 100 ft. Tourists can also enjoy the shade of the rubber plantations here.

The Vembanad Lake: Kottayam is a vast network of rivers and canals which empty into the great expanse of water called the Vembanad Lake. The lake, an enchanting picnic spot and a fast developing backwater tourism destination, provides boating, fishing and sightseeing experiences that are truly exhilarating.
