      City Guide

In the 14th century Kozhikode was actually planned according to traditional Hindu city building guidelines. Modelled on the image of cosmic man with a meticulous grid system, little evidence remains that someone actually opened his books to design this city, let alone put anything down in blue ink!

But,even today some of the structures in Kozhikode testify to its varied exciting past. The Tali Shiva Temple (open only to Hindus), that was the centre of cosmic energy in Man, still stands. Churches, mosques and temples mingle. The Kuttichira Mosque and the Church of South India are worth a visit.

Kozhikode has an airport that caters mostly to Middle East traffic. Quite a few domestic carriers fly to Kozhikode from a number of destinations like Mumbai, Bangalore, Goa, Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. The airport is 25 km from town. Pre paid taxis are the usual mode of transport to-and-fro. Don t be surprised at the difference in rates depending on whether you are coming to or going from town

There are direct trains from Chennai, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Mangalore. There are buses to Kozhikode from many places in Kerala, and Bangalore. State-run transport will be cheaper and more rugged. The privately operated buses are slightly expensive but much more comfortable. It is possible to hire a chauffeur driven car to Kozhikode and in Kozhikode to visit other places thereon.

The Mananchira Square is where the Zamorin kings had their palace complex. The Mananchira Library has a great collection of literature in the vernacular. The Pazhassiraja Museum and the Krishna Menon Museum and Art Gallery stand next to each other. The former has a collection of old coins, bronzes and copies of ancient murals; the latter has the personal effects of the late Indian defence minister of the same name. The art gallery exhibits contemporary Indian art and even has some works by Raja Ravi Varma.

The waters off the coast are not suitable for swimming. But the locals enjoy strolling on the beaches and you might too. On Kappad Beach there is a slightly washed out memorial that commemorates Vasco da Gama s famous landing on Indian shores on the 27th of May 1498. The shores that received Vasco da Gama are now the site of a busy industrial city and economic activity centres around the timber industry.

Mallapuram is a small district known for its teak forests, but more famous for the 1921 Moplah rebellion when the Keralite Muslims rose against the British and the Hindus, much to the dismay of Mahatama Gandhi.
