      City Guide

Founded in 1459 AD by the Suryavanshi Rao Jodha, Jodhpur was the former capital of the princely state of Marwar. The city gradually grew around the towering Mehrangarh Fort, which was built as the Rathore stronghold, on the advice of a sage. This desert destination is a pot pourri of temples, monuments, landscaped gardens, spices, brilliantly hued fabric, ornate havelis and traditional hospitality.

Umaid Bhawan Palace, the largest personal residence and one of the best art deco buildings in India is undoubtedly the jewel of Jodhpur. The other architecture in the city echoes with heroic tales and poignant romances where the past nestles evocatively amidst the bustling streets and bylanes.

MEHRANGARH FORT
The invincible Rao Jodha built this impregnable fort (one of the best in India) on a steep hill with a wonderful view of the surroundings. The fort has intricate latticed windows, elaborately carved panels and elegantly curved porches.
Every part of the fort has a special appeal, the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana all contribute to the distinct ambience of the fort. High on the rampart rests the second largest cannon in Asia, the recoil of which requires an area as large as a football field!
You should plan on spending at least three hours at Mehrangarh and save a little time for the museum shop, which has a good collection of handicrafts, books and literature. Some of the products are quite unique like the Pea Pulao Poster .

JASWANT THADA

Close to the fort complex, this 19th century cenotaph was built in white marble, in commemoration of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Rare portraits of Jodhpur s past rulers are also displayed here. Particularly fascinating are the jaali work on the lattices and the intricate carving on the doors. The garden and water tank built in front of the cenotaph are very beautiful and accentuate the serenity of the monument.

UMAID BHAWAN PALACE

This ornate palace was built in the 20th century as a famine relief project, which gave employment to the people over a time period of 16 long years. A fabulous art-deco edifice, Umaid Bhawan is fabulously maintained and one of the most spectacular sights in Jodhpur. The museum within is a veritable treasure trove of memorabilia showcasing the royal past of Jodhpur from tea sets and clocks to paintings and royal apparel. The palace now operates as a heritage hotel, though part of it is retained as the royal residence. Note: The museum is open to visitors for a designated entry fee. It remains closed on Mondays.
