The winter capital of the state of Jammu & Kashmir, is a town blessed with charm and grace. Jammu , developed along the banks of the Tawi River, is set against the foothills of the mighty Trikuta ranges. Founded in the 9th century by Raja Jamboolochan, it is home to the Dogra, Pahadi and Gujjar tribes. The main attractions in Jammu are the various temples dedicated to different deities.
 




Air
Indian Airlines and Jet Airways flights connect Jammu with Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Srinagar.

 Airport: Jammu Airport is 8 km away from city center.

Rail
Jammu Tawi is an important railhead on the Northern Railway line. Express trains connect it with Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta and Amritsar. Some of the trains servicing Jammu include: Jammu Mail, Jammu Express, Shalimar Express, Sealdah Express, Jhelum Express, Madras Express and Rajdhani Express. Railway station: Jammu Tawi, 5 km away from the city centre.

Road
Jammu lies on NH 1A and is connected by the national highway network to all parts of the country. Bus terminus: General Bus Stand.

Climate
Temperatures in Jammu remain between 23.4°C and 43°C in the summer and between 26.2°C and 4.3°C in the winter. Be prepared for some snowfall in the winter.

Peer Khoh
Located about 3.5 km from Jammu, Peer Khoh is a cave shrine famous for its shivalingam. A popular myth is that the cave leads underground to many other cave shrines, and perhaps even out of the country.

Ranbireshwar Temple
Maharaj Rajbir Singh built this temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, in 1883. Inside the temple, there are 12 crystal shivalingams surrounding one central lingam, 7.5 feet high.

Raghunath Temple
Dedicated to Lord Rama, this temple in the centre of town forms the nucleus of a group of other temples. The intricate work on the temple was initiated by the founder of the kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1835 and was completed by his son, Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1860.

Bahu Fort
Over 3,000 years old, this fort is perhaps the oldest structure in Jammu, situated 5 km from the city centre on the left bank of Tawi river.

Peer Baba
This is the famous dargah of the Muslim saint, Peer Budhan Ali Shah. On Thursdays, Hindu and Sikh devotees join Muslims to pay homage.

Mubarak Mandi Palace
A blend of Mughal, Rajasthani and European architecture, this palace is a sight to behold. The most visually stunning part of it is the Sheesh Mahal. It now houses the Dogra Art Museum, which has miniature paintings of the various hill schools.

Trekking
JKTDC provides a detailed brochure on the various treks available in the Jammu area. Summer is the best time for trekking as snow can block the routes during winter.

Skiing
Enrol for skiing classes at Patnitop during January and February. The gently graded ski slopes of Patnitop are ideal for beginners. Surrounding slopes offer great scope for skiers of all levels. JKTDC offers standard accommodation for skiing enthusiasts at Patnitop, Kud and Sanasar, though there are many private hotels and restaurants.

Patnitop
Located 112 km from Jammu, on a picturesque plateau, Patnitop is ideal for picnics and walks, and wonderful treks. Snow-bound during the winter, one can also indulge in skiing here. Buses and taxis are available from Jammu/ Katra/ Udhampur. For accommodation, you will find a number of JKTDC huts and tourist bungalows along with some private hotels.

Kud
Kud, about 106 km from Jammu, is a popular holiday resort on the Jammu-Srinagar highway at an altitude of 1,738 m.

Sanasar
119 km from Jammu, Sanasar is a beautiful meadow nestled amidst winter-green conifers. There is a golf course here for those interested, along with para-gliding facilities. JKTDC provides standard accommodation.

Batote
At a height of 1,060 m, approximately 125 km from Jammu, lies Batote. Perched on the thickly forested slopes of Patnitop, one can get a brilliant view of the Chenab gorge from here. JKTDC accommodation is also available.

Sudh Mahadev
120 km from Jammu, this shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. You can spend the night at the pilgrims sarai run by JKTDC.

Masar Lake
About 60 km from Jammu, tourists come here for boating or the extravagant food and crafts festival held every year around harvest time. Surrounded by verdant conifers, the lake is a shimmering green.

Surinsar Lake
This lake is located approximately 42 km from Jammu and is a must see for its breathtaking view.

Shiv Khori
Considered second only to the shrine of Vaishnodevi, Shiv Khori lies 100 km off Jammu. There is a naturally formed shivalinga here.

The arts and crafts of Jammu and Kashmir are very famous.The pashmina and other woollen shawls with exquisite and intricate embroidery are available here. The main shopping areas in Jammu are Vir Marg, Raghunath Bazaar and Hari Market. J & K Government Arts Emporium is also on Vir Marg.
