Often used merely as a gateway to explore the south, Coimbatore is easily accessible with excellent air, rail and road connections. A shame as the city has lots more to offer by way of natural beauty, cuisine, hospitality, culture and holidays.

Textiles spell money and fame for Coimbatore and is a learning experience for the idle tourist. Weaving techniques, which have been honed to perfection, continue in true traditional style and are passed from generation to generation.

Temples are another facet of this city. They abound in ornate arches and intricate sculptures each with a story to tell. The city itself is moderately sized with all the contemporary conveniences. However, the highlights are its waterfalls, valleys, hills, reservoirs and solitude.

 




Air
IA and Jet fly in daily from Mumbai, Chennai and Kozhikode. IA also flies regularly from and to Kochi and Bangalore. Airport: The Peelamedu Airport is 10-12 km from the city with all the airline counters offering information and hospitality services.

Rail
Coimbatore has an extensive rail network connecting it with ot7her cities in the south as well as certain main cities in the country. There are daily trains from Ooty (Nilgiri Express) and Chennai (Shatabdi Express & Kovai Express). Additionally, the Coimbatore-Rameswaram Express travels via Madurai; the Kanyakumari Express and the Hyderabad-Kochi Express are other daily trains connecting Kanyakumari and Kochi to Coimbatore. Railway station: The Coimbatore Junction, 2 km south of the Central Bus Stand in the city centre, is easily accessible from all parts of the city.

Road
Is well connected by road to almost all major places in the south. Both private and government buses travel from and to the city. Bus stand: Central Bus Stand at Gandhipuram and another at Ukkadam. The main one is at Gandhipuram, which has three bus stations at 100 m from each other. Buses travel to the following places from these two bus stands. The Gandhipuram Bus Stand operates buses connecting Coimbatore with Bangalore (330 km), Thiruvananthapuram (400 km) and Chennai (532 km), to name a few. The Ukkadam Bus Stand connects Palani (108 km), Munnar (166 km km) and Madurai (227 km) to Coimbatore.

Climate
Pleasant, equable climate with summer temperatures soaring to 38°C and dipping in winter to 20°C.

All year through with breezy summers, romantic monsoons and nippy winters.

The city abounds in textile mills with different yarns and colours spilling over. A walk through the streets is interesting and for the shopper there is a lot to buy.

Perur Temple
Temple with intricate carvings, where the temple deity is Shiva. An inner hall, Kanagasabi, is an example of exquisite workmanship. It is the main crowd puller of the temple. Shiva s consort Pachai Nayaki shares the space with the main deity in this temple. Was built by Karikala Cholan and is a mere 7 km to the west of Coimbatore.

Maruthamalai Temple (12 km)
A typical example of temple architecture in the south, the temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, where the residing deity is called Dandayut. The vantage location on a hillock ensures a position of prominence and a view of the surroundings. The temple complex is set in a park called VOC Park, named after the freedom fighter VO Chidambaram. Has a mini zoo and a toy train with its tracks laid out in landscaped lawns. Steep steps lead to the temple but at regular intervals there are mandaps where pilgrims can rest.

Forest College
The second forest institution in India, its 3 km from the railway station. Worth visiting is the glass museum where an assortment of interesting curios are on display. Students and people from all over the world are trained in various aspects related to forestry.

Topslip (37 km)
Something straight out of a picture postcard. Green vales nestling in the Annamalai hills. Superb views and perfect weather make it the ideal picnic spot.

Siruvani Waterfalls & Dam (37 km)
A stone dam with cascades of water set in beautiful surroundings. The crystal waters of Siruvani are renowned for their taste; people flock here for a sip of it.

Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary (90 km)
Located at an altitude of 1,400 m, it stretches to cover an area of 958 sq km. The park is rich in both flora and fauna, with the commonly seen species being tiger, panther, bison, deer, wild boar, pangolin, wild dog, flying squirrel and jackal. The Amaravathi Reservoir within the park is home to the fresh water crocodile. Grassy hillocks, mysterious groves, misty waterfalls and much more make your visit very special.

Erode (100 km)
A municipal township, which is the birthplace of Periyar E Ramaswamy popularly known as Thanthai Periyar throughout Tamil Nadu. The other attraction is two ancient temples, dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. Is situated on the banks of the Cauvery River and has a history which dates back to 850 AD. Erode has nurtured the clannish Padiars, Muslim rulers followed by a brief interlude with Tipu Sultan before flourishing under the British reign.

Black Thunder (40 km)
Finally it s here! India s answer to foreign water parks. It is modelled on the lines of Water Kingdom in Mumbai, however on a much larger scale. With a backdrop of the Nilgiris, this theme park is a scene of non-stop fun and adventure. On offer are a combination of land games and a plethora of water ones. Their wave pool is the largest in India. Other attractions are endless camel rides, pools, video games and a 1.8 km moat which traverses the entire area of the park.

Sarees are what you must buy when in Coimbatore, which is nicknamed the textile capital of India. Additionally, bolts of brightly coloured silk and vividly patterned cotton that could be used as a tablecloth, a runner, or made into a skirt or simply worn as a wrap. Save at least one complete day for browsing around the markets. Some of the popular shopping areas are:
· Devaraj Arcade, Barathiyar Road, is a one-stop shopping experience.
· SB Towers, Pollachi Main Road, has everything from food items to cosmetics and clothes.
· Sri Devar Shopping Complex, Avanashi Road, has varied shopping options under one roof.
