      City Guide

While this ancient city gains its spiritual sustenance from the most important shrine of Sikhism, the fabulous offerings of street cuisine keep your taste buds on a constant high. Talk about Amritsar and immediately it conjures up images of the legendary Golden Temple and the city s culinary heritage. Also fighting for space on this volatile canvas are images of the Samjhauta Express linking two nations cast asunder by the roll of political dice.

Established by Guru Ram Das, Sikh s ffourth guru, in 1577, Amritsar rose to become the most sanctified city in Punjab and a major trade and industrial centre under the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh himself. A vital pawn in the game between the Sikhs and the Mughals, in more recent times it was the venue of the traumatic Operation Bluestar initiated by the then PM Indira Gandhi to flush out Bhindranwale, who spearheaded the movement for an independent Sikh nation. Today, as you follow the procession of the Guru Granth Sahib to the Akal Takht, those traumas are scattered to the winds? what remains is the air of deep devotion.

The Golden Temple or Hari Mandir , situated in Amritsar, Punjab, is the most sacred temple of the Sikhs. The site of the temple was sacred to the Sikhs since the time of the 4th guru, Ram Das. It is a symbol of the magnificence and strength of the Sikh people all over the world. All Sikh people try to make a visit to the temple and take bath in the holy tank of the temple.

Jallian Walah Bagh
This place is noted for its most notorious massacre under British rule. It is 400 meters north of the Golden Temple. The British General Dyer was the Lieutenant Governor of the province in 1919. He banned all meetings and demonstrations led by Indians against the economical set back by World War I. On 13 April 1919, pilgrims poured into Amritsar to celebrate the Baisakhi festival, a holiday in the Sikh calendar. In the afternoon thousands of people gathered at Jallian Wala Bagh to celebrate Baisakhi. This ground surrounded by high walls on all sides has only a narrow alley for access. General Dyer personally led the troops to the sight and ordered his men to open fire without any warning. It resulted in the death of 379 and injured more than 1200. India was outraged by Dyer s massacre. Gandhiji, called for a nation wide strike and started the Non-cooperation Movement, which became an important mile stone in the struggle for India s Independence.
